Rwanda begins Zipline commercial drone deliveries

What is being hailed as the world's first commercial regular drone delivery service is beginning drop-offs in Rwanda.
The operation uses fixed-wing drones that automatically fly to destinations in the central African nation.

They release small packages attached to parachutes without needing to land at the delivery points before returning.

The technology promises to make deliveries much faster than had previously been possible by road.Image copyrightZIPLINEImage captionPackages are dropped from the drones, which do not land until their return to base

Zipline - the US start-up running the project - is made up of engineers who formerly worked at Space X, Google, Lockheed Martin and other tech companies.

Its drones will initially be used to deliver blood, plasma, and coagulants to hospitals across rural western Rwanda, helping to cut waiting times from hours to minutes.

The aircraft are launched from a catapult and fly below 500ft (152m) to avoid the airspace used by passenger planes.

They have an operational range of 150km (93 miles) but could, in theory, fly almost twice that distance.Image captionZipline's drones are launched from a base near the capital, Kigali

The drones are powered by a nose-mounted battery and guide themselves using GPS location data.

They send back information to both their base and to Rwandan air traffic control via a cellular connection.

To begin with, 15 "zips" will fly round the clock and in up to 30km/h (19mph) winds and light rain if necessary.Image captionDuring the final week of testing, Rwanda's military showed an interest in the project

Zipline will be paid by Rwanda's health department on a per delivery basis.

The company says the cost per trip is roughly equal to that of the current delivery method, by motorbike or ambulance.

A wide variety of companies - including Amazon, DHL and Singapore Post - have demonstrated drone deliveries elsewhere that use aircraft that can touch down at both ends of their journey.

But one expert praised Zipline's stay-in-the-air approach.Image copyrightZIPLINEImage captionHealth workers can order a Zipline delivery by text message

"This avoids the risk of recipients getting in the way of rotating blades," said Dr Ravi Vaidyanathan, from Imperial College London.

"So long as there is no prospect of a plane falling from the sky and there is no danger posed by a package dropping on to anyone, then this sounds like a positive environment to begin drone deliveries."

Drones have already been used for humanitarian purposes elsewhere in Africa, including in a now-ended project to deliver blood and stool samples in Madagascar, and a Red Cross initiative to monitor a refugee camp in Uganda.

But some aid workers have expressed concern that they are not always appropriate.Image captionRwanda's rural and hilly landscape means it is much quicker to make deliveries by drone rather than by road

"Whether we like it or not, UAVs [unmanned aerial vehicles] are confused with weaponised drones and are perceived by the general public as related to military operations and/or intelligence gathering," one Congo-based worker told a study carried out by a Swiss foundation.

"In countries and contexts with conflict environment, it is illusory to imagine that the general public, authorities and the armed actors will make a distinction between good 'humanitarian/civilian' drones and bad 'military' drones."

Although Rwanda's military has shown interest in Zipline's work, the country's information and communications technology minister has said it has no plans for the defence department to use the technology.
Security fears are holding back drones in Africa: Dickens Olewe, BBC News

A Swiss university drew up plans for a futuristic drone delivery project called Flying Donkey about three years ago. The vision, just like the drone delivery project in Rwanda, was to operate fixed-wing drones in northern Kenya, to supplement postal services.

The project did not take off because the authorities saw it as a threat to security.

Months later, they used the same reason to shut down a conservation project that was to monitor elephants in a conservancy to protect them from poaching.

Commercial use of drones is still a nascent industry in Africa but there is a small but growing community of hobbyists.

Most governments on the continent have clamped down on drone operators by imposing laws that ban or restrict their use, inadvertently killing innovation and locking the countries out of investments that could create jobs.

While there are legitimate concerns about privacy and safety, the absence of progressive drone laws that also cater for innovation means African countries will continue missing out on the multi-billion dollar industry.

In addition to Rwanda, South Africa and Mauritius are leading on the continent, having come up with regulations that allow for licensing and operation.

Morocco, Kenya and Uganda have imposed bans and/or restrictions for operations.

In Ghana, drone operators risk up to 30 years in jail if they don't register their drones.

Fighting Fires from the Sky, No Pilot Necessary

Lockheed Martin is using a fleet of drones and automated helicopters to extinguish flames and rescue people.

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire—and soon there will be drones, too.

The aerospace and defense company Lockheed Martin has developed a number of autonomous aircraft that can work together to fight fires and rescue people, without humans having to risk their lives. The setup uses two small drones to provide reconnaissance, and two automated helicopters to carry out the tasks of putting out fires and recovering stranded victims.

First, a quadcopter drone uses thermal and visible light imaging to identify the location of a fire. It then shares that information with a cargo helicopter that’s been converted to fly without a pilot, which is able to carry water to the scene to extinguish the flames.
Lockheed Martin's autonomous K-MAX helicopter hauling a piece of gear.

Then, a fixed-wing drone can be used to identify people at the site who might be at risk. In much the same way as the first wave of response, it’s able to share information with another autonomous helicopter, which can land nearby so that victims can hop aboard to escape the scene.

According to Wired, Lockheed Martin tested the craft last week, and hopes to have the helicopters actively fighting fires within the next five years. That’s not as crazy as it sounds: autonomous flight is technologically better developed than, say, self-driving cars. While such aircraft might not be put to use in urban areas, they’d be perfectly well-suited to dealing with wildfires.

Still, regulation remains a problem. Until recently, red tape had hindered commercial drones in the U.S., but even with that now out of the way, an air-traffic-control scheme still needs to be developed for automated craft. If that logistical issue is resolved, rescue workers dealing with wildfires may be able to step away from the front lines in the coming years and let drones take over.

Watch This Self-Flying Quadcopter Land on a Car Traveling ehicles have notoriously short ranges, which limits the potential of the drone delivery business. But the ability to take off and land from moving vehicles could change that.

by Emerging Technology from the arXiv

One of the great potential applications for automated drones is parcel delivery. But their limited range makes this challenging. So one idea is to carry drones on delivery trucks and use them to make the delivery over the last half mile or so and charge them when they get back. The drone would take off from the truck carrying a parcel and return after making the drop.

The ability to take off and land on the vehicle while it is moving would make this particularly attractive. Such a delivery truck need never stop during its round.

Taking off from a moving vehicle is straightforward—it is generally equivalent to taking off on a windy day. But landing is a different story and raises an interesting question. Is it possible for an autonomous drone to land on a moving vehicle?

Today we get an answer thanks to the work of Alexandre Borowczyk and pals at the Mobile Robotics and Autonomous Systems Laboratory in Montreal. They've used low-cost sensors to build a simple system that allows an autonomous drone to land on a moving vehicle.

The system consists of a landing pad marked with a 2-D bar code called an AprilTag and fitted with a mobile phone that broadcasts its GPS coordinates and any changes in motion.

The quadcopter drone is fitted with its own GPS unit and inertial measurement unit and so has a good idea of where it is in 3-D space. It also has a gimballed camera and an onboard chip for processing the images and plotting trajectories.

The landings occur in two phases. In the first, the quadcopter drone plots a trajectory to the ground vehicle using its own and the vehicle’s positions.

In the second phase, it uses its onboard camera to locate the bar code on the landing pad and then uses this to navigate and land on the pad on the roof of the vehicle.

The results speak for themselves. Borowczyk and co have used their system to land an autonomous quadcopter on a vehicle moving at 30 km/h, 40km/h, and even at 50 km/h (see video). “We demonstrate experimentally automatic landing of a multirotor MAV on a moving ground vehicle traveling at the highest speed to date, with successful tests carried up to a speed of 50 km/h,” they say.

That’s impressive work that adds yet another brick to the infrastructure that could make drone deliveries possible sooner rather than later.

Facebook’s Plans to Bring Flying Internet to Everyone Aren’t Going So Well
The Aquila drone’s maiden voyage ended with a splat, not long before the company’s satellite went up in flames.
by Jamie Condliffe
November 22, 2016

Liftoff for the Aquila drone went very smoothly.

What goes up doesn’t necessarily come down in one piece. That’s what Facebook seems to be finding out during its tests of prototype systems designed to get the world online.
The social network cooed when its stratospheric Internet-spewing drone, Aquila, took to the skies for the first time back in July. But while the test flight lasted three times longer than planned, it didn’t end so well. Facebook engineers noted at the time that the aircraft suffered a “structural failure” during the flight. But according to Bloomberg, the National Transportation Safety Board has been investigating the incident, and now says that the aircraft experienced “substantial” damage.

It’s the second big setback for Facebook’s plans to bathe the planet in Internet access. Back in September, a SpaceX rocket containing the Amos 6 communications satellite exploded on the launchpad. A large chunk of the satellite’s spectrum was reserved for use by Facebook as part of its plan to roll out wireless broadband across the globe. The explosion has since been found to be the result of a fueling problem, but that’s no consolation to Mark Zuckerberg, who at the time said that “the problem isn’t the money; it’s that now it may take longer to connect people.”

Clearly, Zuckerberg is feeling the frustration that comes with testing exotic hardware. (It’s almost as if it’s more difficult than building a website.)

Still, it’s understandable: two-thirds of the company’s three-part plan to connect the world is now mired in technical issues. The third route to providing a global Internet, by the way, is a new breed of wireless networks. At least they don’t need to be airborne.
